The Safety Behind the Scrolling

There always seems to be talk regarding social media and the privacy concerns that come along with it. From the time I first began using social media, I started with the Instagram app, my mother was adamant about being careful with what I shared and the settings in which my account was set to.

The news has recently covered many incidents concerning the safety of the public's privacy on Facebook. The company lost $80 billion last year in share value due to a scandal in Cambridge and has reported a 15 million user decline in the United States since 2017. 

In response to these negative allegations and situations Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new plan for a "privacy-focused" Facebook. In an interview Zuckerberg related people's desire for connection to be private in nature. He wants to create a new outlet for this market with a "digital equivalent to a living room."

Privacy will be upheld with the company's decision to reduce permanence of information by choosing not to store sensitive data. This will impact Facebook's reach inn certain countries and will be blocked due to various foreign laws, but Zuckerberg stated it was a risk worth taking. 

I think that Facebook truly understands the extant to which they upset users and are making strides to employ actual change that will encourage their users to feel safe again.
